ADHD is a complex disorder, and each child's treatment plan should be tailored to their individual needs. ADHD treatment depends on the child’s age and may include medication, parent training, behavioral therapy, coaching, and educational support (IEP or 504 plan). Stimulant medication is the first-line treatment for ADHD, but the decision to start any medication will be thoroughly discussed and agreed upon by the provider, the parents, and the child. It’s important to weigh the risk and benefits of any medication.
Medications are not a cure for ADHD, but they may be able to help control the hyperactive/impulsive and inattentive symptoms of ADHD. Medication may not be right for everyone with ADHD, but it can play a vital role in the total treatment plan along with coaching and other therapies. Learn more about medication management and therapy.
Although therapy alone has not been proven to be as effective as medicine for treating the core symptoms of ADHD, it may initially be recommended as the sole treatment for children under 6 years old, the ADHD symptoms are mild, but there is uncertainty as to the ADHD diagnosis, or the parents prefer to start with therapy.
Parenting skills training is also a valuable tool in managing ADHD symptoms. This type of training teaches parents how to structure the child's environment, set clear expectations, and reward positive behavior. This approach can help children develop better self-control and reduce disruptive behavior.
It's important to remember that treatment for ADHD is not a one-size-fits-all approach. A combination of medication, therapy, coaching, and other supports may be necessary for some children, while others may only need one or two treatments. Our providers at KEGE Center for ADHD work with each family to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the child's unique needs and supports their overall well-being.
