Do I need laboratory testing (aka "blood work")?

Modified on Fri, Apr 21, 2023 at 3:50 PM

Your KEGE Center provider may order laboratory testing (blood work) at the start of treatment for a variety of purposes, including ruling out medical causes of psychiatric symptoms, recording baseline data before prescribing medications that may lead to lab abnormalities and screening for general medical problems. Depending on the medication prescribed, routine blood work may be needed to monitor drug levels, A1C, blood cell count, lipid levels, and kidney/liver/thyroid function. In otherwise healthy patients, annual blood work is adequate for monitoring.

All labs are ordered electronically through Sonora Quest or Labcorp. The cost is typically covered by most insurance plans. Laboratory testing may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of medication or to detect any side effects that may require adjustments to the medication regimen.

It's important to note that some medications used in psychiatric treatment can affect the functioning of organs such as the liver, kidneys, or thyroid. Routine monitoring of these organs through laboratory testing is essential to ensure the medication is not causing any harm to the body.

Your KEGE Center provider will discuss the specific tests that may be ordered and why they are being ordered prior to being ordered.

It's important to follow the instructions provided by your provider regarding lab testing. Fasting is usually required for certain tests, and it's important to inform your provider of any medications or supplements you are taking, as they may affect the test results.

Finally, it's worth noting that some insurance plans may have specific requirements or limitations regarding laboratory testing. Your provider can help you navigate these issues and ensure that you receive the appropriate testing based on your individual needs.
